![]() Thus you can use amiga to format disks to PC format (720KB or 1.44MB if you have a HD drive), but not the other way around. The PC floppy controller is much more rigid and doesn't allow as flexible track layout as amiga (technical: Amiga can write full tracks with whatever track layout desired, PC controller cannot). ![]() It's perfectly possible to use the higher density floppies in place of the lower density ones. ![]() There are however double density (up to 1MB unformatted size) and high density (up to 2MB unformatted size) floppies (some higher density ones do exist as well, but are rather rare). The disks are exactly the same physically. Sure you'll get some duds in the lot, but these older disks tend to age a lot better than the cheap crap that was produced in the late 90s.I think there is a lot of confusion in this thread, and not alone from sim085.įirst of all, there are no "PC" or "amiga" floppies. If you see some chap in the local ads selling a bunch of old DS/DD disks, that can also be a good source. Having never used them myself, I can't vouch for their quality either. You can order new DS/DD disks from but they are not exactly cheap. And from my own experience, the more recent the drive on the Amiga, the better they get at reading HD disks properly (maybe the newer heads are more sensitive?) but I'm only saying that out of my own anecdotal observation.not sure there's any science to back me up here. But the basic rule of thumb here is: the more recent the disk, the cheaper the quality. How much use is dependent on the quality of the disks. So while you can format the disk as DD, it usually results in corruption after a bit of use. HD disks are made with much thinner coating and are designed for drives with much more sensitive heads. ![]() You CAN use HD disks and format them as DD, but it's not optimal. You only need to cover up that hole in HD drives that refuse to format HD disks in another format than 1.44. The standard DD drives on the Amiga are not equipped with the sensors needed to check that hole. Covering up that hole does absolutely nothing on the Amiga. ![]()
